Young Imam (Imam Muda) – A Hit TV Show In Malaysia

The Young Imam Show

A televised search for Malaysia’s most eligible young Muslim leader has caught the country by storm.  Following closely to the modus operandi of the “American Idol” and Britain’s “The X Factor”, Malaysia’s “Imam Muda” or “Young Imam” is a different spin and features ten good-looking male contestants aged between 18 and 27, including a farmer, a businessman, a student, and a banker.  Each week, the contestants – who are dressed in sharp black suits and matching skullcaps – are put through a series of complex challenges.  One contestant will be knocked out at the end of each show, and two men have been knocked out thus far in two tear-jerking farewells.  The winner of the Young Imam can expect a trip to Mecca to perform the haj, a full scholarship at the al-Madinah University in Saudi Arabia and a job at a Kuala Lumpur mosque.

Imam’s Role In Malaysia Society

Imams play a significant role in Malaysia’s society where the majority of the population is Muslim.  They lead prayers at the mosque and provide religious counseling to individuals.  During prime-time TV, the Young Imam contestants take on challenges like singing, reciting verses off the Quran, prepare unclaimed corpses for Muslim burial and raid hideouts where Muslims are suspected to be engaging in extramarital sex.  Like the “American Idol” and Britain’s “The X Factor”, many women and potential mothers-in-law were smitten by these young men.  Izelan Basar, manager of the broadcasting TV station, said “For Muslims, the Young Imams are ideal sons-in-law because they are professionals and have good knowledge of Islam.”

Support From Women In Facebook

Many fans have loaded up heaps of praise in Facebook in support of their favorite Young Imam contestants.  One comment in Facebook read, “Wow, it was great to see Young Imam participants being regarded as stars. Fans were taking photos of them. Mothers were not shy to offer their daughters.”  Khairul Azhar, a college graduate and a Young Imam contestant, said he was thrilled to know that many women had openly expressed their longing to marry the Young Imam contestants.  “Yes I have heard about it. I think I can be a good husband and a responsible father.”

Young Imam Is A Landmark Program For Islam

Media commentator Azman Ujang said, “The show is a landmark program with a refreshing approach to Islam.  An imam is usually linked with someone old. But here we have young personalities. It gives a vibrant look to Islam at a time when the community is facing so many social ills.” One fan said, “These young imams are modern, and we need that. Muslims these days are very progressive and after September 11, it’s good for us to show the true picture of Islam.”

Hasan Mahmood Holds The Crown For The Young Imam

Hasan Mahmood – a former grand imam and the “Simon Cowell” of the Young Imam show – is the sole judge with prerogative powers over the fate of the contestants at the end of each show.  He said that the Young Imams “have a duty to safeguard Islam and teach Muslims to live harmoniously with other faiths. We will use them to fight social and moral decadence affecting Muslims, like free sex and drugs. What is the use of us achieving rapid economic growth and having dazzling skyscrapers when the society is sick?”

Key Events In Malaysia

While Malaysia is generally considered as a moderate and progressive country, three Muslim women were, in an unprecedented ruling this year, caned for engaging in extramarital sex.  Also early this year, the use of the word “Allah” by non-Muslims became offensive to Muslims.  The uproar threatened to tear apart the multi-faith Malaysian society when Christian churches, Hindu temples and mosques were attacked.

Think About It

Should a man become an imam because of popularity and not because of his calling in life?  Is Hasan Mahmood correct to say that imams can “fight off social and moral decadence affecting Muslims”? If so, how do they do it? According to Izelan Basar, many women have expressed their longing to marry the Young Imam contestants because “they are professionals and have good knowledge of Islam”.  Have these women considered that the men could be putting on a good front for the show?

on teh question of whether the young imams can really fight moral decadance in modern day malaysia, the answer is yes. as u all know the programme is aired prime time. i dont think teh contestants are ready to be embarassed in front of teh whole country. very rarely, we have a positive, glamour religious reality programme on air. so why not give these ppl teh tumbs up?
