If you ask this question to people who have been following developments in Malaysia, chances are that you will receive answers like: “She is the Malaysian model caught for drinking alcohol in public and now facing 6 lashes of the cane as punishment.” You might even hear that she is a Singapore permanent resident, married to a Singapore citizen. That’s factually correct. But really, how much do we know about Kartika? Who is she? Blogosphere has its own answers to this question. Some bloggers says she is a Singapore citizen, others say she is Indonesian. Now in separate reports by Harian Metro and Berita Harian Malaysia, Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno tells us something about her background. First she addressed the question of her nationality. ”I am a Malaysian citizen. So many have presumed and said I was born in Singapore or that I’m from Indonesia. But the truth is, I was born and raised in Malaysia.” And she added that her ancestors are Malaysians – not ordinary Malaysians, but Malaysians of significance. Digging deep into history, she claimed that she could trace her lineage through her father’s line to Ngah Ibrahim, a Malay nobleman and ruler in Perak best remembered for fighting the British in the 19th century. Then tracing her lineage through her mother’s line leads her to Megat Terawis, another chief of a Malay state known as the Perak Bendahara. Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno said she is disclosing her background not so much to boast, but to clarify all those errorenous comments appearing in blogosphere. Her caning case is now under judicial review. As far as we know, nothing will happen during this holy month of Ramadan. What will be the outcome of the review? Will Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, like her ancestors, go down in Malaysia’s history as Malaysians of significance by being the first woman to be caned? Will history remember her for this, or for being the Malaysian woman that brought changes to the caning law? Who is Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno? Indeed! they only punish people who are “helpless”. Sounds like bully…
I think Kartika dont want to be remembered and dont want to be in history.Because it bring shame to her name. In my opinion she wants to show that the muslim law really wants to punish them those whose disobey this law.and for other muslim may not do things against their law which I think it is found in Koran.Sad to say they only punish those who are “helpless”.But what about those people that brings disaster or even death to other people?They do nothing about it.They did not even cane Mr.Mas Selamat in public to show that they are really sincere about obeying the Koran.
