While still on the subject of child marriage, here is a YouTube video clip that may throw some light on the subject. The debate is still ongoing as to whether child marriages should be banned or not.
In this video, the question is asked whether a 12-year old boy can marry a 11-year old girl according to Islam.
Dr Ahmad Al-Mu’bi, Saudi Marriage Officiant, argues that the example set by Prophet Muhammad should be followed. Dr Ahmad Al-Mu’bi was referring to Prophet Muhammad taking Aisha to be his wife when she was 6-year old, and having sexual relationship with her only when reached 9-years of age
Dr Abd Al-Hamid Al-’Ubeidi, Iraqi expert on Islamic Law argues that this depends on the age of maturity of the girl. He implies that this age of maturity is the age at which she has her first period. And Dr Abd Al-Hamid Al-’Ubeidi argues that there is no fixed age, as this varies from place to place. In some countries, this may be younger while in cold countries, girls may have their first period at 22 years of age.
What is the age of maturity of a girl? At what age can a girl begin to have sexual relationship with a man? Listen to the arguement from both sides on this topic of child marriage.
