District head Ramli Mansur has signed a bylaw that prohibits Muslim women in West Aceh from wearing certain kind of trousers. The niqab on the other hand, covers the entire face, with slits for the eyes to see through. It is said that 80% of Egypt’s women poplulation wears the higab. But the Egyptian government is worried that increasing number of its [...] So Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, the former journalist convicted in Sudan for wearing “indecent” clothing (a pair of trousers) has been freed from prison. She was orginally faced with caning (and indeed most of the women caught for the same offense at the same time and place as Lubna Hussein had already been dealt with by caning). [...] So the verdict is out. A court in Khartoum has fined Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein 500 Sudanese pounds (approximately US$200) for wearing ”indecent” trousers. She was not given any lashing of the cane. However the court also ruled that if Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein does not pay the fine, she will have to serve a prison term of one [...] September 7 – that’s the date everyone who is following Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein case in Sudan will be watching out for. Lubna Hussein has a date with a court in Khartoum – the third time – which is hearing a charge against her for indecent dressing in public under Article 152 of the Sudanese criminal laws. [...] While the world is fixated on the case of Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno who was caught by religious police for drinking alcohol in public and sentenced to 6 lashes of the cane plus a fine, let’s not forget that another woman is also facing caning in Sudan. But there are differences in these 2 [...] A recent BBC report from Sudan said that Lubna Hussein, journalist and UN worker, is to be charged in Khartoum for wearing “indecent” clothing in a restuarant with 18 other women. It seems that 10 of these women (including non-Muslims) were already dealt with by the court – they were each fined $100 and ordered to be given [...] |
