Sudan is in the news again. This time it involves the caning of Silva Kashifa, a 16-year old girl who was charged with wearing indecent clothing and sentenced to 50 lashes of the cane. She was wearing a normal skirt. Remember Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein? She was a widow and former journalist who was charged with wearing indecent clothing, which [...] If you are wondering what is Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein (that former journalist who last worked for the UN Mission in Sudan) doing nowadays, here is an update. Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein became a celebrity of sort when she was arrested along with other women at a restuarant for wearing trousers. She was charged under Article 152 of the Sudanese criminal [...] While Sudanese journalist Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein escaped the caning, and Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno is waiting to see if she will be caned, over in Iran police have issued a statement that says that all mannequins must be covered up. By this they mean that the mannequins should wear headscarves and body curves must be [...] Remember Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, that former journalist who last worked for the UN Mission in Sudan? She was arrested along with several other women at a restuarant and charged wearing indecent clothing (basically a pair of trousers, or jeans)? Several of those ladies were caned for this offense, but Lubna fought it out. In the end, bowing [...] Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno who was sentenced to a fine and 6 strokes of the cane under Syariah law for drinking alcohol in public is all set to go through the caning after the end of Ramadan. Apparently feeling the stress of having too many meetings and various advices from individuals, politicians, government organisations and [...] So Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, the former journalist convicted in Sudan for wearing “indecent” clothing (a pair of trousers) has been freed from prison. She was orginally faced with caning (and indeed most of the women caught for the same offense at the same time and place as Lubna Hussein had already been dealt with by caning). [...] With Sudan’s Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein spared the caning, attention is now focused back to Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno who was sentenced to a fine and 6 strokes of the cane under Syariah law for drinking alcohol in public. But exactly how is a woman to be caned under Syariah law? Prosecutor Saiful Idham Sahimi said that [...] So while Sudan’s Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein escaped caning, Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno is in danger of actually being caned. The press has quoted Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein as having “cleared” the Prisons Department to cane model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno. He said: “I am now satisfied that the caning can be carried out [...] So the verdict is out. A court in Khartoum has fined Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein 500 Sudanese pounds (approximately US$200) for wearing ”indecent” trousers. She was not given any lashing of the cane. However the court also ruled that if Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein does not pay the fine, she will have to serve a prison term of one [...] September 7 – that’s the date everyone who is following Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein case in Sudan will be watching out for. Lubna Hussein has a date with a court in Khartoum – the third time – which is hearing a charge against her for indecent dressing in public under Article 152 of the Sudanese criminal laws. [...] |
