Boycott Campaign Backfired
It appears that the controversial campaign by conservative clerics in Saudi Arabia to boycott the Panda supermarket chain – because women are being employed – has backfired. Now, Marhaba, a superstore is following the Panda’s lead in hiring women.
No Alternatives From Conservative Clerics
Saudi columnist Mohammad Al-Saaid said that the Saudi Arabia society has changed which in general, is now in favor of such a shift in mindset. Such shifts are likely to gain momentum in spite of the opposition by the conservative clerics. Mohammad Al-Saaid said, “Panda only took the initiative, and if any other supermarket takes the same step, that will also be more than welcome.” As for those who oppose this change, Mohammad Al-Saaid said that they are now “at a dead end” because they do not offer an alternative.
New Economic Realities In Saudi Society
The economic realities have changed. Now, both husbands and wives will have to work because the men can no longer earn enough to support their families on their own salaries. Mohammad Al-Saaid added, “Before, the market was in need for vocational jobs. That stage is over and now the market is more geared towards retailing, which is where the job opportunities are.”
Good Job, Good Salary
A young Saudi woman who works at Marhaba says she is paid a monthly USD 800 salary. She said, “I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history but the only teaching job that I was offered paid only USD 130 a month.” The job requirements are simple. This includes being a Saudi citizen with a high school or university education, and then to put on a simple abaya, and cover her face while at work. The women cashiers in Panda and Marhaba work in booths that are separated from male colleagues. Only families can join at queue for the women cashiers.
Think About It
Will other retail stores in Saudi Arabia follow Panda and Marhaba to hire women? Are the conservative clerics out to deprive Saudi women of a decent employment? Do the clerics have better alternatives?
