Qory Sandioriva has started to assume duties as Miss Indonesia (Putri Indonesia) 2009. She has just visited Padang in West Sumatra where she presented victims of the recent earthquake with cash, tents and food.
Asked why she chose to visit Padang, Qory Sandioriva said it was because she was touched by the plight of these victims. She added: “It was a powerful earthquake and so many people have become victims.”
On September 30, 2009 a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.9 struck West Sumatra causing extensive loss of lives and property. The official death toll from this tremblor now stands at 1,115. Another 3,000 people are injured, 1,214 of them seriously. Approximately 280,000 homes were damaged. There are still some missing people unaccounted for at this moment.
Playing the perfect Miss Indonesia 2009 role, Qory Sandioriva met the survivors of the earthquake at the Kurao Pagang disaster relief command post in Padang. She told the survivors that she shared their greif over lost property and relatives, and then in a symbolic gesture, Qory Sandioriva hugged the mothers among the survivors.
Aid agencies say that about 200,000 tents are still needed for temporary shelter.
Think about it. Qory Sandioriva did cause a fair bit of controversy during the Miss Indonesia 2009 contest when she did not wear a headscarf as is customary for contestants from Aceh province. Qory Sandioriva was of course the representative from Aceh. This has angered the conservative Muslim clerics in Aceh. What reception will Qory Sandioriva get if and when she does visit Aceh? Would people protest her visit? If so, who will protest? The man in the street? Or the Muslim clerics?
