Qory Sandioriva: “When You Down The Women Can Make You Up”
What on earth did Qory Sandioriva, the 2009 Miss Indonesia mean in saying “When you down the women can make you up”? You might be tempted to think she was speaking at some adult sex talk show, but no, Qory Sandioriva was answering a question posed by the interviewer at the preliminary round of the Miss Universe 2010 pageant recently. And such broken English caused her to crash out of the contest. Now Indonesians are questioning why she did not use an interpreter, and blaming the Putri Indonesia Foundation, organizer of the Miss Indoneisa pageant for not preparing Qory Sandioriva for the international Miss Universe 2010 pageant.
The Question For Qory Sandioriva
During the preliminary round of the Miss Universe 2010 pageant held recently, Qory Sandioriva was asked this question: What is the best advice she can give to a man? Qory Sandioriva answered in English: “I think when you down the women can make you up, and I think the women can be said that “I have advice for you” if you way up, you have to be nice with people, include women, so when you down, women can be nice with you.” Qory Sandioriva then went on to talk about her bad experience with a man with multiple girlfriends.
Reactions
Qory Sandioriva’s poor command of the English language shocked many Indonesians. Nanieshimasu commented onYouTube: “Language is one of the most important factors, therefore you shouldn’t force yourself to speak English. Don’t let language barriers bury your true potential. It’s not perfect but i believe it would be better to use a translator.” Nanieshimasu went on to say that Qory Sandioriva’s poor performance has “once again shown that Indonesia has failed to select a qualified candidate for Miss Universe.”
Another comment on YouTube puts the blame on the Putri Indonesia Foundation. Eriqueque said: “When she was selected as Putri Indonesia, I thought, oh well, she’s naturally pretty and has a lot of potential. Qory has had at least one full year to prepare herself and it’s obvious that she’s been slacking off.”
Silfia Ahmad, a radio announcer said: “Qory went on and on about her bad experience of dating a guy with multiple girlfriends, that’s not proper.” Silfia Ahmad added: “I’m sure in a way she’s an intelligent girl, but the team should know better. If she can’t speak English fluently then don’t use English — use an interpreter instead.”
About Qory Sandioriva
Qory Sandioriva is a student at the University of Indonesia, which is near to her birthplace of Jakarta. She is a student of French literature. Qory Sandioriva represented Aceh province at the Miss Indonesia 2009 pageant. But the problem is that Qory Sandioriva has no real connection with Aceh province. In fact Aceh province never held a Miss Aceh contest, so there never was a Miss Aceh. Qory Sandioriv’s only connection with Aceh is her Acehnese mother. Her father is Sundanese.
So how did Qory Sandioriva end up as Miss Aceh? It seems that Qori Sandioriva became Miss Aceh because she asked and was granted permission from the Aceh government to compete in the Miss Indonesia contest as their representative.
Muslim clerics from Aceh province loudly condemned Qory Sandioriva for not wearing a headscarf during the Miss Indonesia (Putri Indonesia) pageant, and matter was made worse by her admission that “honestly I have never worn a jilbab (headscarf) all my life.”
Her answer to the question posed at the Miss Indonesia 2009 pageant as to why she, as Miss Aceh, did not wear a headscarf was: “Hair is beauty, and I am proud of beauty.” This brought a swift response from Teungku Faisal Ali, secretary general of Daya Ulema Association, who said: “Sandioriva challenged the qanun (Koran), therefore she could not have carried the title of Miss Aceh. We were very disappointed with her appearance.”
Think About It
Why did Qory Sandioriva chose to answer the question at the Miss Universe 2010 pageant in English when she knew that her standard of English is poor? Why didn’t she use an interpreter like other contestants whose mother tongue is not English? Is the Putri Indonesia Foundation, organizer of the Miss Indonesia (Putri Indonesia) pageant at fault for not preparing Qory Sandioriva for the Miss Universe 2010 pageant? Is the broken English of Qory Sandioriva a reflection of the mastery of English at Indonesian schools and universities? If so, what can be done to improve the situation?

Qory Sandioriva: “Honestly I Have Never Worn A Jilbab All My Life”

Irrelevant answers, I don’t even understand what she was saying… so embarrassing! You’re representing a country, y’all think they would pick some one who is more presentable?!
It’s a beauty contest not an english language contest, so does it really matter?
Poor Miss Indonesia, she could’ve been chosen to be one of the top 15, sadly her English sucks badly. I’m very disappointed. A beautiful women with no good English is just the same as a baby who can’t communicate properly.
My country, Indonesia has been flooded with tears. As a secondary/middle school student I was able to speak English properly.
One of the “top 15″ were able to use a translator, but why can’t Indonesia do that prepare that???
See, Indonesia may have beaten Philippine…..
Its such an embarrasament for the country. What the hell she was talking about. Its like “adult” kind of talk, a porn talk. If you knew that your English is such a poor, why didnt you just use translator. Instead of forcing yourself to speak and be a joke of the night! Use your brain and not only your body! The Yayasan Putri Indonesia should really take the blame! They are the one who selected and prepared this girl and she become a joke of the world now and my belovd country Indonesia tag along! Beauty with no brain! Empowering woman? my foot!
I myself don’t understand, why on earth did Yayasan Putri Indonesia sent her in the first place (I know she won). Obviously she can’t speak English (maybe if she answered using French would be much better – considering her college major)
This proves once again a typical Indonesian committee’s way of preparing things even for the international scale (on this matter is the pageant), always on the very last minute. To Yayasan Putri Indonesia, try to change things for the better, especially when it comes to preparing Miss Indonesia for International pageant.
To Qory, if you know that you’re English is so-so-so bad, why on earth you didn’t use an interpreter? Grammatically incorrect is understandable, but this? My Goodness! By the way, I’m half Javanese and half Acehnese (from Peurlak)watching you made a complete fool of yourself is a disgrace for Indonesia and especially (in my opinion) for Acehnese people. Having a good confidence is good but when the outcome is far from your expectation is one thing which you could avoid in the first place. My daughter speaks English better than you and she’s only 6 years old.
May this year be a valuable lesson for you (Qory) and for the Yayasan Putri Indonesia, try to find the 3B (Brain, Beauty and Body) NOT The other way around (Body, Beauty and Brain). And last but not least please do prepare Miss Indonesia a lot better before you send her to the International Pageant. Why? So you wouldn’t make a complete retard of our country (beloved Indonesia).
She is being slacking of for chosen as ms Indonesian
She have to realize that she has the burden to do what is right preparing herself for the pageant. but not, Indonesian teen love to have fun, and being proud for jsut being beauty. thats s shame. Event to trach english to kid wont spend a year. and she just not preparing herself. what a shame
