Fatwa On Social Boycott Of Veena Malik

Veena Malik might have bitten off more than she could chew when she appeared nude on the December 2011 issue of FHM India magazine.  But while Pakistani Muslim cleric Abdul Qawi is still considering a fatwa on Veena Malik, now an Indian fatwa has just been announced.

The Nude Controversy

There is no doubt that Veena Malik appeared on the cover of the December 2011 issue of FHM India magazine.  The controversy however, is over what she wore (or did not wear).  The picture on FHM India magazine shows Veena Malike in the nude.  But Veena Malik claimed that she was filmed wearing a hot pants which was subsequently edited out by the magazine without her knowledge.

Pakistanis are outraged over the nude picture of Veena Malik.  Well known Muslim cleric Abdul Qawi warned Veena Malik that she could be the target for fatwas.  The reason is that her nude pose tantamounts to shaming Islam and making fun of Muslim women.  And to the Pakistan military, Veena Malik’s action is seen as “the height of humiliation for Pakistan, done by a Pakistani on Indian soil.”

But it seems that Muslims in India have beaten Pakistan – they issued a fatwa on Veena Malik.  That fatwa effectively ex-communicated Veena Malik.  The fatwa was issued by the All India Muslim Tyohar(Festivals) Committee in Bhopal. The 2 reasons given for issuing this fatwa are as follows:

1.  Objectionable photographs of Veena Malik on websites;
2.   Degrading the sacred institution of “Nikah”.

Objectionable Photographs

Ausaf Shahmiri Khurram, chairman of the Majlis-e-Shura said: “We were getting complaints from concerned community members who said that the activities of this Pakistani female actor was sending a wrong message to our teenagers, especially girls. The complaints said that there were offensive photographs of this woman all over the internet.”  Majlis-e-Shura  is the 70-member supreme body of the All India Muslim Tyohar Committee.

Degrading Nikah

This complaint about degraing the institution of nikah arose from Veena Malik’s coming appearance in the fourth season of an Indian reality show Swayamvar titled Veena ka Vivah.  Veena Malik was reportedly paid as much as Rs45 million ($855,000) for this.

But what exactly is a Swayamvar?  In Sanskrit, Swayam means self, while Vara means choosing.  Swayamvar thus refers to the ancient Indian way by which a girl of marriageable age chooses her future husband.  On the appointed day, suitors from all walks of life would turn up to ask for the girl’s hand in marriage.  The girl and her family will choose a husband from among the suitors.  Sometimes the process of choosing is aided by evaluating the completion of various tasks assigned to them.  When the girl makes her choice of a husband, she garlands him to indcate this.  A marriage ceremony then follows immediately.

Ausaf Shahmiri Kurrm said: “Islam has a certain procedure for a ‘nikaah’. We do not have ‘swayamvar’.

Ausaf Shahmiri Khurram said: “She has been ex-communicated and no member of the community will entertain her from now onwards.”

Elaborating further o this fatwa to ex-communicate Veena Malik, Ausaf Shahmiri Khurram said: “The extreme step has been taken because the woman has openly revolted against the tenets of Islam and Prophet Mohammad. You are a Muslim only if you follow the rules of the religion. She has made a laughing stock of the community. The social boycott became necessary to stop our community girls from following her example.”

According to Ausaf Shahmiri Khuram, the entire Majilis-e-Shura comprising ulemas, clercs and heads of community deliberated over 2 days before unanimously decided to issue a “fatwa ordering a social boycott of the Pakistani actor.”

Think About It

Ausaf Shahmiri Khurram said that Veena Malik “has been ex-communicated and no member of the community will entertain her from now onwards.”  But isn’t it the personal decision of a Muslim person whether to obey the fatwa or not?   What if her fans continue to support Veena Malik?
