The Ban On Tight-Fitting Clothing
It is now an official law in West Aceh (Aceh Barat); Muslim women are barred from wearing tight pants, trousers, jeans, or any clothing perceived to be tight-fitting. In unprecedented lawmaking on such contentious issues, the West Aceh regency introduced this new law which came into force on May26, 2010. Its reach is insofar as to prohibiting shops and traders to sell such clothing to Muslim women.
The Increased Vigilance On Women’s Clothing
Muslim women can no longer display their hair or womanly figures in this Acehnese area where Sharia law is gradually being introduced. The West Aceh local government is determined to enforce this law with plans to increase patrols and roadblocks. Muslim women caught in violation of this law will have to change, on the spot, into one of the 20,000 long and loose-fitting skirts that the local government has pre-ordered. Their offending clothing will be confiscated. Much gravitas has been placed on the new legislation; third-time offenders will be detained. The Regent Ramli Mansyur, in his briefing to the media, admits that this law, while controversial, is necessary for the application of Sharia law. He said, “I have to implement this law because I will be held responsible for my actions on Earth, and I will be held responsible by society.”
Think About It
Does the act of wearing tight pants really contravene the Sharia law? Are the means and punitive measures against violators justified? How can the success of this law be measured? Will it be true success if there are less violators being caught on the street?
