Nigeria – Man With 86 Wives And Counting

For most people, reaching 84 years of age would be a nice time to relax with great grand children. But Nigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar is a very busy person – he has 86 wives!

Who is Mohammed Bello Abubakar?  Well, he is a former teacher and now a Muslim preacher.  He has fathered at least 170 children.  Ever wonder how a man can cope with 86 wives?  It’s not easy, and Mohammed Bello Abubakar admitted it.  He said in an interview with BBC: “A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them.”

But how did Mohammed Bello Abubakar managed to get girls to marry him? He said: “I don’t go looking for them, they come to me. I will consider the fact that God has asked me to do it and I will just marry them.”

But there is one problem.  Isn’t it true that a Muslim man is allowed to have a maximum of 4 wives at any one time, provided he can treat all his wives equally?  Well, this preacher Mohammed Bello Abubakar has his own answer: ”To my understanding the Koran does not place a limit and it is up to what your own power, your own endowment and ability allows. God did not say what the punishment should be for a man who has more than four wives, but he was specific about the punishment for fornication and adultery.”

So what do we know about his 86 wives? Many of them are younger than some of his own children, and most of them are less than a quarter of his age. So why would a girl in her early twenties want to marry a man in his late eighties? 

Most of these girls met Mohammed Bello Abubakar for healing of their illnesses. Wife Sharifat Bello Abubakar was 25 years old when he met her.  She said: “As soon as I met him the headache was gone. God told me it was time to be his wife. Praise be to God I am his wife now.”

But don’t the girls feel the age gap is too wide for marriage?  Wife Ganiat Bello Abubakar said: ”I said I couldn’t marry an older man, but he said it was directly an order from God. I am now the happiest woman on earth. When you marry a man with 86 wives you know he knows how to look after them.”

So how does Mohammed Bello Abubakar support his large family?  No body knows.  Apparently Mohammed Bello Abubakar and his 86 wives do not work.  All he would say is this: “It’s all from God.”

Since he professed to be a healer, quite naturally he has refused to let any of his family members to take medicine.  Mohammed Bello Abubakar said: “As you sit here if you have any illness I can see it and just remove it.”  But he was wrong.  2 of his children died from illnesses. But even in death, there is an excuse: “They were sick and we told God and God said their time has come.”

So what do his 86 wives see in him?  Well most of them think that Mohammed Bello Abubakar is next in line from the Prophet Muhammad. But does Mohammed Bello Abubakar believe this as well? He claimed that the Prophet Muhammad speaks to him personally and gives detailed descriptions of his experiences.

What do the clerics think of Mohammed Bello Abubakar?  Imam Ustaz Abubakar Siddique said: “This is heresy, he is a heretic.”

 Think about it.  Is Mohammed Bello Abubakar right is saying that the Koran does not prohibit a Muslim man from marrying more than 4 wives?  Is Mohammed Bello Abubakar really next in line from the Prophet Muhammad?  Or is he a heretic afterall?
