A doctor told me that a professor gave his class a pop quiz when he was in his final year of medical school. This doctor was conscientious and had breezed through all the questions until the last one.
The question asked for the name of the woman who cleans the lecture hall.
Surely that was some kind of joke. All the medical students had seen the cleaning woman every day but none of them could answer the question. She was tall, grey-haired and in her 60s, but how would any of the medical students know her name?
All the students handed in their papers leaving the last question blank.
Before the class ended, one of the student asked if the last question would count toward the overall quiz grade.
“Absolutely,” said the professor. “In your careers as doctors you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say ‘Hello’.
It is very natural for us to take note of the important, the rich or the famous and prominent people. We literally ignore the humble and simple people around us. We tend to discriminate against people who are not as successful or are leading a life that is not moral.
But Jesus is different.
John 4:9
“Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.”
During the bible time, the Jews do not like to talk to the Samaritans. But Jesus was different. He talked to a Samaritan woman at the well. He also offered her the gift of salvation. In fact He knows all about the woman before the encounter. Jesus offered that gift of salvation to her despite knowing that she had lived a life that was immoral.
Knowing that Jesus knew who she was and yet cared for her changed that woman’s life.
If you know a particular person is a thief or a prostitute, will you even go near that person? Jesus cares for everyone regardless of what they have done. The bible says He knows all of us by name.
