“If He Needs Sex, Obey Him”

The Obedient Wife Club (Kelab Taat Suami) was officially launched in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday.  And now we are told by Dr Rohaya Mohamad, vice president of The Obedient Wife Club that obeying a husband means to entertain and satisfy him sexually.

What It Means To “Entertain” Husbands

The other day, when announcing the forthcoming launch of The Obedient Wife Club, spokewoman Siti Maznah Mohamad Taufik (aka Maznah Taufik) said: “Obedient wife means they are trying to entertain their husbands, not only taking care of their food and clothes. They have to obey their husbands. That’s the way Islam also asks. Some wives, they just want to get married for leisure but they don’t know the responsibility. To entertain their husbands is compulsory. If she doesn’t do this, the husband will look for another woman… and the house will break down.”

Last Saturday, at the official launch of The Obedient Wife Club, vice president  Dr Rohaya Mohamad, who herself is in a polygamous relationship, said that many Muslims perceive a good wife to be “prim and proper – you just take care of the children.”  But the vice president of The Obedient Wife Club said that something is missing from this general perception.  Dr Rohaya Mohamad pointed out what is missing, saying: “Not much is emphasised on fulfilling sexual needs of the husband.”  Then Dr Rohaya Mohamad added: “If he needs sex, obey him.”

“Whores In Bed”

So now Dr Rohaya Mohamad is saying that an obedient wife is one that satisfies her husband’s sexual needs – or to put it another way, an obedient wife is one that obeys her husband sexual demands.  But this vice president of The Obedient Wife Club is not talking about just simple sex.  46-year old Dr Rohaya Mohamad said: “You must satisfy your husband. A good wife should be a whore in bed.”

Which brings us back to what Siti Maznah Mohamad Taufik (aka Maznah Taufik), spokeswoman for The Obedient Wife Club said earlier: “Obedient wife means they are trying to entertain their husbands… To entertain their husbands is compulsory. If she doesn’t do this, the husband will look for another woman… and the house will break down.”

So now we understand that The Obedient Wife Club considers an obedient wife is one that is better than a whore (a prostitute) in bed when entertaining her husband sexually.

Does this mean that The Obedient Wife Club will be teaching its members the tricks and ways of the whore’s trade so they can obediently entertain their husbands in bed?  Well yes, as we are now told that The Obedient Wife Club will offer counseling and sex lessons to help wives “serve their husbands better than a first-class prostitute.”  But why should the wife be “better than a first-class prostitute”?  Dr Rohaya Mohamad said: “A good or religious wife should also be good in bed.”

And what is a “religious wife”?  According to Dr Rohaya Mohamad, a “religious wife” is one who prays, fasts during Ramadan, protects her chastity and obeys her husband.  She added that if a wife does all this, then she can enter heaven.

“No One Strays”

Siti Maznah Mohamad Taufik (aka Maznah Taufik) said that if a wife does not entertain her husband then “the husband will look for another woman… and the house will break down.”  This view is echoed by 23-year old Mohamad Shurahbil Amran, who married 19-year old Umuhani Lokman Hakim in a mass wedding of 10 couples organized by The Obedient Wife Club at its inaugural last Saturday.  Mohamad Sharahbil Amran said: “If the wife is obedient, then the husband feels good and is entertained and this builds a closer relationship and greater love and no one strays.”

And what has the bride, who along with the other brides at the mass wedding are all members of The Obedient Wife Club, has to say about this subject of “entertaining” husbands?  Umuhani Likman Hakim said simply: “It is the right thing to do to keep the family together.”

Elaborating on this topic to “keep the family together”, Dr Rohaya Mohamad said that problems relating to husbands straying stemmed from unfulfilled sexual needs at home. And when such needs are met by wives, “the family institution is protected and we can curb social ills like prostitution, domestic violence, human trafficking and abandoned babies.”

Maria Chin Abdullah, executive director of EMPOWER, a women’s rights group said: “We cannot go back to caveman days where the man pulls the woman by the hair and takes her to the cave to have his way. We must recognise that women contribute a lot more than just being a sex toy.”

Ivy Josiah, head of Women’s Aid Organization said: “With obedience comes submission, which may lead to domestic violence and marital rape. We should really be forming Equality in Marriage clubs.”

Zul, a 36-year old Muslim husband who works as a technician said that men could still cheat on wives nothwithstanding a happy marriage.  He said: “Yes, sex is important, but you can’t say that it will help curb social ills in such a sweeping manner. There are other factors involved.”

Agreeing, sociologist and social activist Rohanna Ariffin said that it was wrong for women to take all the blame for men’s weakness.  She said: “Women shouldn’t be women’s worst enemy. Husbands have to take responsibility for their own behaviour.”

But there seems to be at least one person in favor of what The Obedient Wife Club is doing. Speaking at the launch of The Obedient Wife Club, Datuk Nasir Ibrahim, deputy chief of Selayang UMNO said: “There may be negative voices decrying this as male chauvinism but I don’t see it that way. If the family institution is strong with good marital relations, it can help counter social ills.”

A person by the name of Matthew Tard Ong has created a a Facebook page called “We Do Not Want Sexist Nonsense From Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd” because he feels that to keep a marriage healthy, both partners must play a role. The group is growing with many users joining in.

Global Ikhwan is believed to be an offshoot of the Al Arqam Islamic movement which was banned by the Malaysian government in 1994 for its deviant teachings.  Today, Global Ikhwan is involved in a range of businesses ranging from breadmaking to restaurants, pharmacies and travel agencies.

In 2009, Global Ikhwan established the Ikhwan Polygamy Club in Malaysia.  The Ikhwan Polygamy  Club now claims a membership base of 1,000 members. 800 of whom are in Malaysia and 200 outside of Malaysia, principally in the Middle East.  It also has a presence in Indonesia.

Think About It

How can Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd promote both the Ikhwan Polygamy Club and The Obedient Wife Club?  If it is true that an obedient wife, whose sexual prowess and entertainment skills in bed is better than a “first class prostitute” can ensure that “no one strays” and that “the family institution is protected” so that the husband will not “look for another woman” that can result in the house breaking down, then why is there a need to promote polygamy in the first place? If a Muslim man “strays” and “look for another woman” to enter into a polygamous marriage, does that mean that the first wife is to blame for the house breaking down?
