In case you are wondering what is happening to the Kartika caning case, here is an update. About 2 weeks ago, Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said: “We do not want the issue to prolong. I hope we can resolve it amicably. I know this is a sensitive issue and we don’t want it prolonged. We hope to resolve it within this one month.” That means the case could be resolved within February itself. Now it seems that Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno could finally be caned after her forthcoming audience with Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.
Earlier this month, the Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah said: “I only heard about her intention to meet me in newspaper reports. I also do not know what will be the subject matter in the meeting; I will only know when the person herself tells me. We will just wait and see,”
Sultan Ahmad Shah then said that Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno could have an audience with him or with his son, the Tengku Kahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.
Now Datuk Abdul Manan Abdul Rahman, director of the State Religious Department confirmed that Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno will indeed have an audience with Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah at a date to be fixed. Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah is also the president of the State Religious and Malay Customs Council.
However Datuk Abdul Manan Abdul Rahman also added that Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno will be caned after that meeting.
Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was caught drinking alcohol and was sentenced last year by the Kuantan Syariah High Court to a fine of RM5,000 fine and 6 strokes of the cane after her guilty plea. She paid her fine, refused to appeal against the caning part of her sentence, and was all ready to be caned.
However, since it was then the holy month of Ramandan, the caning sentence was postponed on the advice of the Pahang Syariah chief judge, Datuk Abdul Rahman Yunus. Since then, no date has been fixed for her caning punishment to be carried out. Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno has pleaded recently not to be left in limbo, asking once more for the caning to be carried out publicly. She also mentioned her desire to seek an audience with the Sultan of Pahang.
The delay in the caning sentence has cost her dearly in terms of a failed marriage. She divorced her husband recently, apparently because of the long separation, she being in Malaysia to await her caning sentence and her former husband being based in Singapore.
So will this caning saga finally end for Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno after she has an audience with the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang? Or will there be more twists and turns to this case. We await the next development.
