Have you ever wondered how safe is your computer? Most of us know that we need to take precautions while on cyberspace. So if we don’t want to fork out money, we go for the free anti-virus options. And we do the same for firewall. Then we let our guard down, thinking that we are safe from intruders and unwanted visitors.
But that’s just guarding the door to keep intruders out. What if we invite them in? How so? We visit sites that are malicious without any hesitation. We follow email links to these sites because these emails supposedly came from our friends’ email addresses. And guess what? Some of these sites will infect your computer simply by visiting them.
A 20-year old Australian man from Adelaide has been arrested and charged with infecting around 3,000 computers worldwide. That’s a lot of computers. But from these 3,000 computers he is said to have the capacity to control a total of 74,000 computers. At his command, these 74,000 computers can participate in a DDOS (Distributed Denial Of Service) attack on a target site. The recent attacks on Facebook, Twitter and LiveJournal are examples of DDOS attacks.
Think about it. How safe is your computer? Is it among the 74,000 computers under the control of this man? If not, is it under the control of someone else? More importantly, how safe are the confidential data on your computer from this man or whoever that is able to control your computer? Can terrorists control your computer to further their evil deeds? Will you be blamed for terrorist attacks because the command to execute the attacks came from your hijacked computer? Is your computer safe?
