Jihad After American Withdrawal?
Last month the emir of the Salafist jihadist in Tunisia said that the “real jihad” in Iraq should start after the American troops have withdrawn from Iraq. This prompted a swift response from Iraq, with the Ulama and Intellectual Group coming out strongly urging religious scholars to issue a fatwa against killing Iraqis.
Mind Your Own Business?
Reacting to the emir of the Salafist Jihadist in Tunisia’s call for a “real jihad” in Iraq, the emir of the Jihadist Salafi group in Iraq rejected this call. Later, Mahdi al-Samud’i, the Salafi leader who recently joined the national reconciliation project said: “Whatever the emir of the Salafist Jihadist in Tunisia said is far from being just.”
In what amounts to a “mind your own business” rebuke, Mahdi al-Samud’i said that Iraqis know their situation best, and they are the best qualified to decide on matters relating to jihad in Iraq. Mahdi al-Samud’i also described the Tunisian Salafist’s enthusiasm as unjustified and from from Iraq’s reality.
Call For Fatwa
Iraq’s Ulama and Intellectual Group rcently made the following call:
1. The issuance of a fatwa by religious scholars against the killing of Iraqis.
2. A mechanism to educate Iraqis to stop violence by cooperating with the country’s civil society organizations and cultural government institutions.
Think About It
Why should the emir of the Salafist Jihadist in Tunisia call for a “real jihad” in Iraq? Does this not amount to interference outside his jurisdiction? Is the call to issue a fatwa prohibiting the shedding of Iraqi blood the right thing to do? Will such a fatwa be issued by any scholar? And will the “mechanism to educate Iraqis to stop violence” succeed? Can it?
