First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Called A “Prostitute”
Amid the controversy surrounding Iranian woman Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, an Iranian newspaper hurled insults at the First Lady of France Carla Bruni-Sarkozy after she condemned the stoning sentence. The Kayhan described First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy derogatorily as a “prostitute” in its daily news publication.
Open Letter By First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy
In a move to show support and denounce the death by stoning sentence, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy published open letters to Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani which read, “In the depths of your cell, know that my husband will plead your cause unfailingly and that France will not abandon you…Spill your blood, deprive your children of their mother? Why? Because you have lived, because you have loved, because you are a woman, an Iranian? Every part of me refuses to accept this.”
“French Prostitutes Enter Human Rights Uproar”
Kayhan published First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy’s letter recently, in which the headline screamed “French prostitutes enter human rights uproar.” It also criticized First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy’s “illicit relationships with various people”. Editor-in-chief of the Keyhan, Hossein Shariatmadari, said, “Studying Carla Bruni’s record clearly shows the reason why this immoral woman is backing an Iranian woman who has been condemned to death for committing adultery and being an accomplice in her husband’s murder and, in fact, she herself deserves to die…Bruni is the singer and decadent actress who managed to break the Sarkozy family and marry the French president.”
Restraint Urged By Iranian Government
Meanwhile, the Iranian government has urged restraint from the its state-run media. A spokesman from the foreign ministry, Ramin Mehmanparast, said that the insults against foreign dignitaries were not officially sanctioned expression. The foreign ministry also urged Iran’s media to use more appropriate language in its reporting as insults are incorrect.
Think About It
Why did the Kayhan newspaper condemned First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy’s support for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani? Are insults the right methods of expression, especially coming from a newspaper? Will insults achieve anything?
