How did Father’s Day come about?
I always suspect that Father’s Day, like many of the other holidays, is the invention of the giant shopping mall operators. You only have to look at the press and TV advertisements to see that there are Sales! Sales! Sales! signs all year round. There are Christmas Sales, New Year Sales, Father’s Day Sales, Mother’s Day Sales, Valentine Day Sales, Good Friday Sales, etc. As if that’s not enough, there are also Post-Christmas Sales, etc. Then there are also Closing Down Sales – which sometimes seems to be perpetually there, as these retailers don’t seem to close down at all.
Out of curosity I started to do some research on Father’s Day. And what a surprise! I found out that Father’s Day was officially recognized as such by a joint resolution of the US Congress in 1956. Furthermore, it was President Richard Nixon who fixed the third Sunday of June as the permanent Father’s Day in 1972. So there goes my theory that it was an invention of the giant shopping mall operators.
But how did the idea of Father’s Day come about in the first place? Well, the genesis of Father’s Day actually came out of Mother’s Day. Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909 when the idea of having a Father’s Day came to mind. She was brought up by her father after the death of her mother, and so, to express her gratitude to her father, she held the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910.
So Father’s Day is for children to honor their fathers. Children, what will you be doing this Father’s Day? While not show your love and gratefulness by sending your father some Bible verses?
Is your father a man of integrity? If so, this verse is for him.
He who walks with integrity walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will become known (Prov 10:9).
Is he a man of knowledge? Then try this verse.
He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit (Prov 17:27).
Perhaps he is a man of discernment?
Wisdom is in the sight of him who has understanding, But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth (Prov 17:24).
