The United Nations has labelled eastern Congo as the rape capital of the world. But of late, the rape victims are not all females. Many male have found themselves being gang raped. Why is this happening?
The recent for this sudden spike in male rape victims is said to be the result of the current joint operation by the armed forces of Congo and neighboring Rwanda against rebels who caused much violence against civilians.
It is said that the somewhat co-ordinated sexual assualts against males is aimed at humiliating and demoralizing Congolese communities into submission. The rebels are thought to be behind this sexual assualt on male citizens.
However, as is common in armed conflicts, females are also subject to sexual assualts. It is said that members of the Congolese army participated in the rape of many women.
Think about it. Why do people rape one another? Why cause great physical and emotional harm to the victims? No doubt many reasons can be given, but the fundamental reason must be that there is no discipline, no law and order. In such a situation, everybody does that which is right in his own eye. The problem is that in such a situation there is really no effective yardstick to determine what is right and what is wrong. No one is in control. Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone coming to provide effective government that can guarantee world peace and harmony?
Are you in a situation right now where no one seems to be in control?
