A Flying Donkey – An Ass Of An Idea?

The Flying Donkey Stunt

Recently sunbathers on a beach by the Sea of Azov in southern Russia were startled to find a braying donkey attached to a parachute in the skies above them. The parachute was being pulled by a boat. The frightened donkey eventually fell into the water, where it was dragged along for several meters before being pulled out onto land half alive.

The Spectators’ Reaction To A Flying Donkey

Children cried, while adults reached for their cameras or called the press. Larisa Tuchkova, a spokeswoman for the regional police, said “No-one had the brains to call the police”. Another police spokesman, Denis Yegorov, said that he was surprised the spectators did not knock the teeth out of the donkey’s owner for subjecting the animal to such cruelty.

The People Behind The Stunt

They were a group of entrepreneurs who thought that the stunt would attract customers for their parasailing business. Instead they attracted the attention of the police.

The Outcome Of The Stunt

The police have launched a probe into the incident and are looking for the owner of the donkey, who managed to leave the village taking the donkey with him. And animal rights groups have called on the authorities to take serious steps to eliminate cruelty to animals in Russia.

Think About It

How cruel can people be to animals? Or were the entrepreneurs not intentionally cruel, but just too hare-brained to realize what torture they were inflicting on the poor donkey? What about the spectators? Should they have been able to see beyond the novelty factor, to recognize the cruelty to the donkey?
