We have all read or heard of fatwas issued by Muslim clerics and scholars. But there are those who feel that some of these fatwas are really extremist in nature. Now a Saudi judge has stated that issuers of such fatwas need to be re-educated and re-guided. It compared smoking to suicide which is forbidden in Islam. But now controversy and opposition surround that fatwa. Opposition to the smoking fatwa came from Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, and the Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI).
