A report by the American Center for Law and Justice caught my attention a while back. The eye-catching headline reads: “A Victory in Defending Christian Convert in U.S.” It tells the story of how a 17-year old Muslim girl, known simply as Nishan, living in Ohio with her father became the subject, of an arranged marriage in [...] Sudan is in the news again. This time it involves the caning of Silva Kashifa, a 16-year old girl who was charged with wearing indecent clothing and sentenced to 50 lashes of the cane. She was wearing a normal skirt. In case you missed it, 29-year old Yuri Foreman has just won the WBA super welterweight championship boxing fight a fortnight ago. If you missed it, it is perhaps understandable, because many people were more interested in following the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight then. The Malaysian state of Pahang is the only state in Malaysia to impose mandatory caning penalty for Muslims caught consuming alcohol. It is this state that imposed a caning sentence on Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno for this very offense. By now we have all heard or read what Henry Thierry said of his handball foul which sent France into the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final competition at the expense of Ireland. Henry Thierry said: “I am not a cheat and never have been”. Henry Thierry added: “I did handball the ball, but I did [...] Twenty three years ago, at the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter final match in Mexico, Argentina’s team captain Diego Armando Maradona scored a goal aginst England with his hand. The referee did not see that infringement, and awarded the goal to Argentina, much to the protest of the England team. Recently women MPs in Kuwait won the right not to wear the Muslim headscarf in Parliament. In many western countries, freedom of dressing for women is a given. But for many Muslim women, they have a dress code to observe. |
