Aceh has been in the news lately because of Miss Indonesia 2009 (Putri Indonesia) Qory Sandioriva. The controversy over Qory Sandioriva was her decision not to wear a Muslim headscarf for the Miss Indonesia 2009 (Putri Indonesia) contest because “hair is beauty, and I am proud of beauty.” Aceh is the only province in Indonesia granted permission [...] Ladies, what would you say if the law of your country says that you are guilty of causing deception if you wear your everyday bras? And what if the law says further that you can be whipped or caned publicly for this offense? That’s what’s happening in Somalia nowadays. A Reuters report just caught my attention. Al-Shabaab [...] Newly crowned Miss Indonesia 2009 (Putri Indonesia) Qory Sandioriva is trying to defuse the tension caused by her remarks during the contest. In the question and answer stage of the contest, she was asked why, as contestant from Aceh, she did not wear a Muslim headscarf (jilbab) whereas previous contestants from Aceh did just that. While waiting, it is a good time to reflect on what exactly is at stake in this case. First off, is there a uniform set of laws called Syariah law (or Sharia law)? The headlines reads: “Syech Puji acquitted from child sexual abuse charge” and “Cleric files report over extortion”. Who is Syech Puji? Well he is Pujiono Cahyo Widianto aka Syech Puji. 43 year old Syech Puji is the head of an Islamic boarding school (Ponpes Miftahul Jannah) in [...] So Indonesia has chosen its representative for next year’s Miss Universe contest. The 2009 Miss Indonesia (Putri Indonesia) title goes to 18 year old Qori Sandioriva.
